CHARLES M. SALTER ASSOCIATES (CSA), located in San Francisco’s financial district with a branch office in San Jose, was founded in 1975 and currently has a staff of over 40 who consult on over 700 projects annually. Our consultants have backgrounds in engineering, architecture, music, speech, theater and telecommunications. This diversity of experience allows our firm to provide clients with tailored services for a wide variety of project types.

CSA has an in-house presentation studio, used to simulate acoustical environments. The presentation studio is often used to help better inform clients, including, condominium developers, The Disney Corporation, Apple Computer Inc., Kaiser Permanente and the Fireman's Fund.

In 1998, CSA authored ACOUSTICS: Architecture, Engineering, the Environment, a book for architects, engineers, facilities managers, specifiers, and other professionals with a need for information on acoustics.

CSA’s subsidiary company, the Audio Forensic Center, specializes in tape enhancement, tape verification and authentication, audibility analysis, and acoustical simulations.

Charles M. Salter, P.E., President, has practiced acoustical engineering for over 30 years. Since 1974, he has been a licensed, professional engineer in California and Nevada, and board certified by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering. With educational backgrounds in architecture, engineering, planning and business, Mr. Salter has conducted a wide range of consulting work in the areas of architectural acoustics, noise control engineering and environmental noise impact. He has had project responsibility for various facility types including hospitals, office buildings, schools, churches, theaters, residences and power generating plants. For 32 years, he has taught acoustics at University of California at Berkeley College of Environmental Design. In addition, Mr. Salter has served as an expert witness in over 100 cases including 15 trials dealing with issues including the San Francisco Cable Car noise and freeway noise in Las Vegas.

Mr. Salter received the Allied Professions Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects for his numerous contributions to the field of architecture.

David R. Schwind, FAES, Senior Vice President, specializes in acoustical design for theatres, dwellings, mixed-use projects, performing arts centers, multi-purpose auditoria, film and broadcast studios, music recording and production spaces. He has been an acoustical consultant since 1975. His expertise includes peer review, feasibility studies, facility programming, room acoustics design, sound isolation in buildings and building systems noise and vibration reduction. In 1995, the Audio Engineering Society elected him Fellow for his contributions to architectural acoustics and sound system design. In 2002, his Alma Mater, Purdue University, conferred the title "Outstanding Interdisciplinary Engineer" in recognition of his leadership, creative endeavors, and professional contributions. Numerous theater projects where he has led the acoustical design have received USITT awards.

Mr. Schwind current and recent consulting projects include the Colburn School of Performing Arts, Letterman Digital Arts Center, Warner Bros. Post-production Complex, among others. Previous projects include the California Theater, Santana Row, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Berkeley Repertory Theater, the San Jose Repertory Theater and the Harris Concert Hall. He has consulted on numerous projects for Lucasfilm, Pixar, Warner Bros., Fox, Disney, Paramount, and Sony studios. His broadcast facility experience includes Network Centers for Fox and Turner, and local affililiates KQED, KPBS, KPIX, KRIV, KPCQ, and KTTV.

Anthony P. Nash, P.E., Vice President, is a senior project manager with over 30 years of service as an acoustical consultant. With a special expertise in measurements of vibration and floor motion, Mr. Nash has authored numerous technical papers regarding sound and vibration in buildings. He has studied vibration sensitivity of scientific apparatus in a dozen research laboratories including IBM, Genentech, Lawrence Livermore, University of Washington and Stanford. Additionally, Mr. Nash has considerable experience in other areas of consulting including multi-family housing and mechanical systems.

As a committee member of ASTM for the past 25 years, Mr. Nash has been actively engaged in developing standards for acoustical measurements in buildings. He has designed and modified measurement instrumentation and in 1995, consulted with Hewlett Packard to help improve their next generation of digital noise/vibration analyzers.

Thomas A. Schindler, P.E., Vice President, has over 20 years experience in acoustical and audio/visual systems engineering. His areas of expertise include architectural acoustics, noise and vibration control, and audio/video system design. These engineering skills are applied to a broad range of projects, including performance spaces, media production and post-production facilities, laboratories and educational facilities. Mr. Schindler prepares specifications and details, conducts field-testing and data analysis and develops remedial solutions for existing acoustical and audio problems. His recent project experience includes the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Community School of Music and Arts, and the Letterman Digital Arts Center.

Eric L. Broadhurst, P.E., Vice President, has over 20 years of experience in acoustical engineering. His areas of expertise are multi-family housing and entertainment facilities. His experience includes architectural noise control, mechanical system noise and vibration reduction, environmental noise studies and vibration analyses. His consulting encompasses design work, post-construction testing and expert witness testimony. Recent projects include Metropolitan Condominiums and Bridgeview Condominiums in San Francisco, KABC Studios in Glendale and the Template Hospital design for Kaiser. He is a registered mechanical engineer in California and a Board-Certified Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering.

Philip N. Sanders, Vice President, has more than 18 years of consulting experience in architectural acoustics, environmental acoustics and HVAC noise and vibration control. Some of his notable projects include the Sony Metreon in San Francisco, Electronic Arts production facility in Foster City, San Jose Repertory Theater and the Fox California Theater in San Jose. His projects also include university facilities, healthcare facilities and multi-family housing.

Robert P. Alvarado, Vice President, specializes in architectural acoustics and ventilation system noise and vibration control. He has extensive experience consulting on environmental acoustics, healthcare, multi-family housing and mixed-use projects. Since 1998, he has been a guest lecturer at University of California at Berkeley, University of Oregon and has acted as a professional mentor and guest speaker at Stanford University Graduate School of Engineering. Some of his recent projects include the Clark Center at Stanford University, Golden Gate University, Bay Meadows and Santana Row.

Jason R. Duty, Vice President, specializes in architectural acoustics, noise and vibration control, and environmental noise mitigation. Recently, he has been involved with the new Dougherty Valley High School, Aptos High School Performing Arts Center and Gymnasium, Corporate Offices for HBO, Contra Costa County District Attorney's Offices, Abundant Life Christian Fellowship Church, Family Community Church and the Travis Air Force Base Band Practice Facility. In addition, Mr. Duty develops computer models and acoustical simulations.

Cristina L. Miyar, Vice President, has been an acoustical consultant with CSA since 1995. She has a Master's degree in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley. She specializes in architectural acoustics, noise and vibration control,and environmental noise reduction. Typical projects include acoustical design for screening rooms, film and broadcast studios, theaters, multi-purpose auditoria, performing arts centers, educational facilities and multi-family housing. Some of her recent projects include the Disney Concert Hall and Colburn School of Music projects in Los Angeles, a new post-production facility for Warner Bros. in Burbank, CA and the new de Young Museum in San Francisco.

Michael D. Toy, P.E., Principal Consultant, has over 20 years of experience in acoustical consulting. He has supervised a wide range of projects including performance, educational, residential, broadcast, medical and office facilities. His areas of expertise include architectural acoustics, environmental noise analyses, and mechanical equipment noise and vibration control. He also has served as an expert witness.

Durand R. Begault, Ph.D., Principal Consultant, specializes in forensic audio and video analysis, psychoacoustics, digital signal processing and acoustical engineering. Dr. Begault has served as an expert witness and legal consultant on a variety of technology, music and audio-related cases since 1987, and serves as Director of the Audio Forensic Center's scientific team and laboratory. Dr. Begault is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society, a member of the Acoustical Society of America and the Institute of Noise Control Engineering.

Timothy G. Brown, Principal Consultant, specializes in the areas of environmental and architectural acoustics and vibration. Mr. Brown’s projects include the measurement and analysis of vehicular and rail induced noise and vibration near residential and commercial developments. In addition, he has worked on the acoustical design for educational facilities, multi-purpose auditoriums, and medical facilities. Some recent projects include Livermore Performing Arts Center, Milpitas Public Library, Bay Meadows, UC San Francisco Mission Bay Community Center, Embarcadero Center, and the UC San Diego Scanning Tunneling Microscope Relocation.

He specializes in architectural acoustics, environmental noise control, and mechanical equipment noise and vibration control. He has consulted on an array of projects including multi‑family housing, hospitals, offices, performing arts spaces, and educational facilities. Some of the notable projects Holst has consulted on include the Letterman Digital Arts Center, Kaiser Template Hospital, One Rincon Hill Condominiums, HBO Headquarters Relocation, and Colburn School of Performing Arts.

Randy Waldeck's, LEED AP, areas of expertise are in environmental, aviation, architectural, and mechanical equipment noise and vibration control. An acoustical consultant with Charles M. Salter Associates since 2001, his wide range of project experience includes Raley Field Amphitheater, W Hotel and Residences in Los Angeles, Kaiser Template Hospital, GSA Workplace 20|20, and Mineta San Jose International Airport Acoustical Treatment Program (ACT) Phases 6, 8, and 9. Waldeck received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.

Kenneth W. Graven, P.E., LEED AP, Vice President, specializes in the design of audiovisual systems for a wide range of facility types and uses including boardrooms, videoconference rooms, distance learning, recording studios, council chambers, courtrooms and auditoriums. Clients benefit from Mr. Graven’s understanding of the complex relationships of audio/visual technology, architecture and the human user. Mr. Graven recently completed a post-occupancy evaluation of audiovisual technology in Federal Courthouses in twenty-seven cities. Recent corporate presentation facility projects include Scios, URS and Texas Pacific Group. Mr. Graven has also provided services for large distance learning projects including the Gladstone Institute in San Francisco, CA and the California Department of Health Services in Richmond, CA.

Thomas J. Corbett, CTS, Principal Consultant. In addition to his 24 years of experience in the audiovisual field, Mr. Corbett has 20 years of teaching and theatrical production and facility design experience. His projects include classrooms and training rooms, legitimate theaters, corporate auditoria and public assembly installations including churches, conference rooms and ballrooms.

Ross A. Jerozal, Principal Consultant, specializes in audiovisual system design. He has design experience in audiovisual for speech reinforcement, playback, broadcast, sound masking, teleconferencing, presentation systems and home theater. His projects include corporate auditoria, videoconference rooms, performing arts theaters, worship spaces and residential systems.

Joseph G. D'Angelo, Principal Consultant, specializes in audiovisual system design. He also specializes in Command and Control Centers, Visualization Facilities, Museums, Corporate Meeting Facilities, Front and Rear Projection, Sound System Design, Translation Systems, and Public Meeting Facilities such as the City Council or Board of Supervisor Chambers. Prior to joining CSA, he attained worldwide recognition for his work in building vehicles with extensive audio, video and security systems. Some of his projects were featured in the Tokyo Auto Show and the Consumer Electronics Show. He is also a contributing editor to Systems Contractor News.

Edward A. Morris, Senior Consultant, has performed work in many areas of electronic communications. This work includes data center design, structured cabling design and integration of voice and data networks, wired network systems design, wireless network system design, design of local area networks (LAN), campus area networks (CAN), and wide area networks (WAN) over copper and fiber optic cabling. In addition, Mr. Morris has a wide range of experience with OSP Networks (Outside Plant).

He also has experience with single‑family residences, including personal movie theaters, house-wide audio and video systems, and building management systems integration. Stanley has been an audiovisual consultant with Charles M. Salter Associates since 2001. He specializes in architectural acoustics, environmental noise control, and mechanical equipment noise and vibration control. He has consulted on an array of projects including multi‑family housing, hospitals, offices, performing arts spaces, and educational facilities. Some of the notable projects Holst has consulted on include the Letterman Digital Arts Center, Kaiser Template Hospital, One Rincon Hill Condominiums, HBO Headquarters Relocation, and Colburn School of Performing Arts. He is a member of the United States Green Building Council, Construction Specification Institute, and ASHRAE and is an associate member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering. Holst is the coauthor of “Multi-family housing sound isolation: a summary of industry standards for design of demising assemblies,” presented at Inter-Noise 2006, sponsored by I-INCE. He received his Bachelor of Science and Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and his Professional Engineering License in Electrical Engineering.

Randy Waldeck, LEED AP, is an expert in environmental, aviation, architectural, and mechanical equipment noise and vibration control. An acoustical consultant with Charles M. Salter Associates since 2001, his wide range of project experience includes Raley Field Amphitheater, W Hotel and Residences in Los Angeles, Kaiser Template Hospital, GSA Workplace 20|20, and Mineta San Jose International Airport Acoustical Treatment Program (ACT) Phases 6, 8, and 9. In 2006, Waldeck presented his paper “Case Study Assessment of the Speech Privacy and Sound Isolation of Spaces Having Underfloor Air Distribution System” at the Center for the Built Environment at UC Berkeley and at the I-INCE conference in Hawaii. His professional affiliations include Institute of Noise Control Engineering, Center for the Built Environment, American Institute of Architects, and International Interior Design Association.
